So if you're using a Cat 5 ethernet cable which is the same ethernet cable that's probably running into your modem in your house right now it's nothing special nothing unique that runs from the sea into a switch or a router and then that goes from there into your computer or your HDMI and some major Mai's even have a built in crossover function where you don't even have to have a switch between them you can actually run the cable straight from the PC to the HDMI and it will do the crossing over for you whenever you try to use an Ethernet cable you can't run that cable generally straight from one device to another.

But when you're using normal ethernet cables you do need to have some network infrastructure in between a switch or a router or something like that and you're usually going to want that anyway because most of the time your PCs and skater's and HDMI eyes are actually going to be on a network anyway so just depends on what your needs are but with ethernet you have a much more scalable application than if you're using either a serial cable or number three a proprietary cable proprietary cables are different for every manufacturer.
